Premera Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alaska’s three-tier prescription formulary promotes the use of cost-effective medications by offering lower co-pays for generic and preferred brand-name drugs.  Premera’s Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, which creates formulary tiers using current scientific data, meets six times per year to update the list of preferred drugs.  The program not only saves members money through lower co-pays but also raises awareness of the comparable effectiveness of less expensive generic drugs.  Furthermore, members continue to have access to the broadest possible selection of prescription drugs.
